Embracing the Call to Follow Jesus
“Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”
~ Luke 14:27 (ESV)

The Journey of Discipleship
Growing up as a young girl in the church where my grandfather was my pastor, I learned the lyrics to a precious hymn written by Simon Marak:
“I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus,
No turning back, no turning back.”
The following verses tell a powerful story:
“The world behind me, the cross before me” (verse two);
“Though none go with me, I still will follow” (verse three);
“Will you decide now to follow Jesus? …No turning back, no turning back” (verse four).
As I reflect on these lyrics, I find profound insight into what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ: to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.
The Call to Follow
Do you remember the moment you accepted Jesus’ gift of salvation? It’s a beautiful experience, isn’t it? However, what’s often not explained is the difference between accepting Jesus as Savior and yielding to Him as Lord. These two roles are not the same. To receive Jesus as Lord, we must be willing to become His disciple. This means we must deliberately choose to follow Him every single day.
Luke 14:27 (ESV) reminds us, “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”
Salvation is a matchless gift from our Savior, offered freely for our taking. It costs us absolutely nothing. However, the cost of discipleship is different. It requires us to follow Jesus daily, taking up our cross in pursuit of Him. This journey is not always easy, but it is profoundly rewarding.
Living a Life of Devotion
In a world where many express devotion to various causes, I desire my life to be marked by my devotion to The One who truly matters. I want to be a devoted disciple of Jesus. This commitment is not just a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice to live in alignment with His teachings and example.
Will you join me over the coming months as we embark on a new blog series titled “Devoted Discipleship”? Together, we will explore what it truly means to follow Jesus. We will define and discover what being a fully devoted disciple looks like in our everyday lives.

Embracing Spiritual Growth
As we delve deeper into the concept of discipleship, let’s explore how we can cultivate spiritual growth. Discipleship is not just about following rules; it’s about developing a relationship with Jesus. This relationship is nurtured through prayer, reading Scripture, and engaging with fellow believers.
The Power of Prayer
Prayer is our lifeline to God. It’s how we communicate with Him, share our hearts, and seek His guidance. When we commit to a daily prayer practice, we open ourselves to His presence and wisdom. This connection strengthens our faith and empowers us to live as true disciples.
The Role of Scripture
Reading and meditating on Scripture is vital for our spiritual growth. The Bible is filled with wisdom and guidance that can help us navigate life’s challenges. By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we learn more about His character and His desires for us. This knowledge equips us to follow Him more closely.
Building Community
Community is essential in our journey of discipleship. Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers provides support, encouragement, and accountability. Together, we can grow in our faith and challenge one another to live out our commitment to Jesus.
Conclusion: A Lifelong Journey
Discipleship is a lifelong journey. It requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to grow. As we embark on this path together, let’s encourage one another to embrace our roles as devoted disciples of Jesus. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Let’s commit to this journey of faith, knowing that we are not alone. Jesus is with us every step of the way, guiding us as we strive to live, love, lead, and leave a legacy that honors Him.
